You like Britney Spears. That's fine by me. I guess it's the testosterone...or something. She co wrote on some of her new album, so i guess she's trying She's never going to be respected for something other then a rich teeny bopper, though.

Maybe she doesn't want to be. Maybe she does, I don't know her. I'd like to, though. Now THAT'S the testosterone talking. ;D Anyway, yeah I like Britney. That was the original point of the topic... Speaking of abberations in taste, my Mum, she the Fleetwood Mac and Boyzone fan, said Limp Bizkit were really growing on her, this being only a year after openly enjoying Metallica's S&M. The world is turning upside down!

That's impressive... Mum actually likes quite a bit of my tastes like Powderfinger, Pearl Jam and of course SFK. Dad doesn't mind SFK but thinks the others are shit. But yeah Mum's never been much into anything other than the soft rock.
Dad has liked songs by the Butthole Surfers and the Living End but that's about it.

"I don't mind the songs (despite my usual tastes) and if she wants to use her sex appeal to sell her songs, I'm not complaining. It's just another selling point. Just like SFK might make an instore appearance to drum up some sales, Britney wears less. Tell me you don't like looking at an arse that fine" Look beyond the arse for a sec and think how would you feel if you were a woman? Is it really right that someone with so much influence over so many young girls protrays these kinds of messages to them? I also think because of stuff like that, real female musicians who are talented and have integrity get subjected to "show us your tits Steph." and dont always get the respect and recognition they deserve. Just because Stephanie happens to be a stunning female, doesnt mean she should have to be privy to that. I dont think you can really blame Britney for whether her new songs suck or rock.... i mean, its not like she writes them

"She co wrote on some of her new album, so i guess she's trying" Just read that... whoops... i guess i was wrong Maybe thats why you guys think that new stuff sucks.... She probably just writes the lyrics anyway (as i figured she would anyway).... or could i be wrong again? What is it they say she is writing now? ps - sorry to ppl posting who like her.... i dont mean to offend anyone, i just dont like her

Ah, she speaks with Wisdom.
I agree with the first post totally. Heaps of female musicians are being ignored. If you're a girl and you perform in..you know... clothes, then obviously, you're not going to get the publicity people who forget to...you know...wear something, get.
Plus, you don't have to be a brilliant songwriter to get a pop hit. I mean, most of them are two words and a steady drum beat.
She didn't write the music.

I am not a britney fan by any means but i have a certain amount of respect for her. She is doing what she wants to do, and doing it quite well. She may not write all her music but she puts the effort in in other places, such as the dancing which would take heaps of work to pull off. And the outfits... well i can't imagine that she would wear them unless she wanted to. And why not? If you've got it... I don't think it is her fault, or other half clothed women in the industry, that some women are stripped of respect and recognition as musicians. I think it is more society and testosterone (some men just can't seem to help but if you ask me that is a bit of a cop out ) But as a female musician i totally agree that some don't recieve the recogntion that they deserve, but you would have to hope that if the music they make is worthy then it will be recieved regardless of clothing or gender.

Ooops.. forgot to add my own pop confession. The only one i can think of at the moment is, as mention before, Robbie Williams. I thinks it's just that he is very charismatic and funny, for a little while i tried not to like him but i couldn't do it I don't like all of his music though, just some of the stuff he released.

It's not Britney as a person, it's britney as a musician. And is she doing what she likes? How do you know? She's scripted. You never know, she could be a secret Punk fan. And it is true that she gets a lot of publicity because of her huge amount of hits, BUT- go back about a year ago. Vanessa Amorosi (sp?) had a hit album, three or four top ten singles, yet Britney still got the coverage. Even the Australian magazines kept Britney on the cover with headlines about her hair, her makeup, her boyfriends. And as for the males, hehe. Why is it that male hormones get in the way of everything?

i had a similar argument with a teenybopper once, and she was very adamant about nick carter being a huge nirvana fan. that just made me feel sick

I wonder what Britney's approval rating would be among girls her own age? I wouldn't think it would be high... the word is jealousy... Deny it if you like, I won't believe you. I have sisters who are honest enough to admit it.
I have a few points to respond to here so this could be long and I might get a bit confused, so bear with me:
"Is it really right that someone with so much influence over so many young girls protrays these kinds of messages to them?"
Exactly what messages are you talking about here? That guys like looking at pretty girls? That sex sells? Debate whether it's right or wrong all you like, but that's just the way it is. I'm not saying accept it, but don't say something's wrong, work out why it's wrong and what you can do about it. If it can't be changed, use it to your advantage. Or just get stuck in the problem.
Besides, who's to say she's saying any of these messages? There's a little thing called pride in one's appearance. I'm comfy enough in my tracky dacks and two-day stubble if I'm hanging around at home, but if I was on display for the whole world, I'd make sure I was looking as good as I possibly could. How is what Britney wears any different to half the girls at the nightclubs? It's not like Britney came before nightclubs, so you can't pin that on her. Nor can you pin any of society's other problems on her. I also think you should be giving the people of this world a bit more credit. Just because she's dressing a certain way, doesn't mean automatically, like sheep, they will. There's heaps more influences on someone, especially someone as young as most of the Britney fan base. Parents, friends, other public figures, but really nobody's going to wear something if they don't want to.
And how is "Show us your tits Steph" any different to the well documented "Take it all off Paul"? It does go both ways. Just like Britney uses sex appeal, so does Robbie Williams and Five and NSync and all those other boy bands. Except for the facila hair on the alcoholic Backstreet Boy, what's going on there? ;D Again, I'm not saying it's right, do you remember that appalling show Man O Man from around 1994? I considered that the low point of television until reality TV stooped even lower. It's not just guys, girls like to look at attractive people and as a result they'll get more attention. It's also not a simple case of "change your attitude" because it's not an attitude, it's an instinct.
Also, you don't think female musicians get enough respect... it depends on the type of music. Rock is a man's world, just like commercial R&B is a woman's world. (two examples) There are still bands like Killing Heidi, Superjesus and Lash that do well, and guys like Nelly and Usher because the cream will still rise to the top regardless of gender. But the also-rans in each industry are the gender-dominated areas.
To Hemis, are you that cynical that you think Britney's been scripted her whole life? While she didn't make it big until 17, she was singing publicly in the Mickey Mouse Club at about 11, and as she wasn't singing Sex Pistols covers, I can only assume she's not a secret punk fan.
Vanessa Amorosi (can't spell it either... call her Vanessa A) isn't a worldwide success, she's had some hit songs in Australia (personally I don't know what Australians were thinking) wheras Britney's songs are popular in something like 50 countries. Maybe more. It's really little wonder the magazines cover Britney more... And we also get a lot of our entertainment from America. Movies, TV, music... If people are interested in something, the media will cover it. It's not the other way around. Why else does AFL get 5-10 pages in Melbourne newspapers but very little in Sydney (and vice versa for NRL)? Why do our front pages say Bin Laden is a tosser? I bet the Iraqi or Palestinian papers don't say it as much.
As for Nick Carter and Nirvana... well provided the Backstreet Boys don't cover Heart Shaped Box he can like whatever he wants.

You make some good points, especially about the appearance. I think a friend of mine said about the chapel gig "Why are they wearing suits? Are they selling out?" I'd do the same if I was playing for national television though.
If you don't like something then just try to ignore it.
btw, I remember Man O Man, that was a shocker ;D
